Quality film based on a true story, great acting by Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. If you love scarface then you will love this, BUY IT!

In what is perhaps the most audacious smuggling operation in history, 70s drugs kingpin Frank Lucas used the coffins of ill-fated US soldiers to shift heroin from war-torn Vietnam to the States. Denzel Washington makes no apologies as the visionary, real-life American Gangster in director Ridley Scott's sharply riveting crime saga. And with Russell Crowe playing the ramshackle detective on Lucas' case, it's a guaranteed shot of pure heart-pumping entertainment.

Lucas ascends the ranks quickly after the mobster he's been chauffeuring for years passes away. He takes control in New York and soon leads the pack as the biggest supplier of heroin in the US. The messy transition of power warrants a film in itself so it takes a little while before Scott settles into gear. Meanwhile, Richie Roberts is trying to deal with the collapse of his marriage as well as the frightening realisation that he may be the last honest cop doing the rounds.

With shades of Scarface and Serpico, the film isn't original, but there's a raw energy about Scott's direction and a smouldering livewire performance from Washington that keeps you on edge. And like his character, he resists being too flashy. Crowe makes a great counterpoint as Roberts, taking small, meditative steps on the way to nailing Lucas - and carrying the weight of that burden over his belt. The two stars rarely share a scene, but when they eventually find themselves in a room together, it's all the more satisfying because of it. Until then, Scott trades on the sense of that impending collision, flagging all of Lucas' little slip-ups and Roberts' minor breakthroughs for maximum dramatic effect, all of it culminating in a boldly muted finale. It's a cautionary tale as American as mom's apple pie - and the greedy boy who tried to eat it all himself.

So far this is the film of the year.

One of the best movies in years due to the fact that the script is fantastic, great acting and good directing.

And its a true story which makes it all the better.

Cracking film with some of hollywoods greatest actor's at the top of their game. I don't want to go in to the guts of the story as this would spoil it only too say that if you want to sit down with the better half for a cracker of a feature film, this one can not be recommended highly enough.

one of the best movies i own besides scarface.a brutally honest account of drugs in the ghetto,the rise and fall of the drug dealer and the corruption within the police.there are two alternative endings which i enjoyed.it was a bargain,so why rent when you can buy it and watch it over and over again.

brought it cos it was cheap ....and turns out t be a real good film. Violent but still worth a watch without the kids.

An intelligent, powerful and epic thriller that tells the twisting tale of the rise to power of a ruthless but honourable crime boss in the drug underworld of Harlem. The film is fast paced without being frantic and holds the attention from start to finish. An excellent cast take their roles well and are believable in their characterisation. All in all a great evenings entertainment. The sort of film to keep and see again.

Some gangsters, like Tony Soprano, are done in by their lusty appetites. Others are stabbed in the back by former associates. A few even get nailed by the authorities. But Denzel Washington's drug kingpin in American Gangster is derailed when he deviates from his sedate fashion sense. His kingdom for a fur coat. Chinchilla, to be precise.
Gangsters are a timeless staple on the big screen. To stand out, this genre film must come up with a new twist on an old story or haunt us with indelible performances. Though it lags in the middle and is at least 15 minutes too long, Gangster is a sprawling, fascinating look into the complicated mind and operations of the head of a crime syndicate and the conflicted emotions and tenacity of a police detective on his trail.

The movie's captivating power hinges on two dead-on performances. Denzel Washington is stellar as Frank Lucas, a former driver for a black crime boss who becomes the inner-city Don Corleone.

With its epic feel and its depiction of Lucas' devotion and loyalty to his family, Gangster echoes The Godfather. Russell Crowe plays Richie Roberts, a professionally principled, but personally troubled police detective who alienates those around him, from his ex-wife (Carla Gugino) to his colleagues on the force. He is derided for being a Boy Scout after turning in a large sum of ill-gotten gains. As a cop who also is studying law, Roberts works to bring down Lucas and his empire.

BOTH MY HUBBY AND I LOVE GANGSTER MOVIES SO THOUGHT THIS ONE WOULD BE GOOD, HOWEVER WAS A BIT DISAPPOINTED WITH LACK OF ACTION. STORY LINE VERY GOOD AND ACTING BY ALL LEADS EXCELLENT.

Based on a true story and the Main characters make you feel that you are right there with them. However the violence is not for the squeamish

A true story put to screen perfectly.
Gritty, exciting and perfectly portraid. Great acting through out and a real incite into this true drugs and crime fighting depiction.
You wont regret owning or watching this and no doubt will be a cult classic in years to come.

I enjoyed this film........The story line is interesting, entertaining and well worth watching. Any gangland/drug film lovers will appreciate this film very much. Denzel Washington plays an excellent part, with Russell Crowe as a New York Cop hot on his heels!

Simply an epic new gangster film, looking at the criminal underworld from a different perspective to the normal guinea or irish mafia settings. Harlem and the rise of black criminal figures is a brilliant back drop, filled with a stunning cast who portray a film that is essentially based in fact.

A must see for any ganster film fans.

One of the best films ive seen in a long time. Denzel Washington is superb throughout and has Russel Crowe (the only straight cop in New York) chasing him. The film is based on a true story and believe me its a story you don't want to miss.

A brutal but brilliant film, superb cast (Denzel Washington & Russel Crowe) in this powerful epic story. The best movie of 2007, excellent director (Ridley Scott), if there is one movie you need to watch right now it's this one. You will not be disappointed!

Great film, watched at cinema and knew I had to own it on dvd.got a bargain of ebay. Denzel at his greatest. If you like goodfellas, the godfather, you will love this. Dvd was in excellent condition and only watched once with reasonable postage.
