Album Notes Against Me: Seward, Gabel, Oakes, Bowman.Recording information: 2005.Against Me proved to be somewhat of an anomaly on the US hardcore scene in 2005. There's no emo, screamo, or metalcore to be found on SEARCHING FOR A FORMER CLARITY--just straight-up, three-chord grassroots punk that earned the Florida quartet a rabidly devoted following. Whether the band is performing a folk-like acoustic number or a revved-up barnstormer, frontman Tom Gabel's charmingly gruff, off-key singing carries this thoroughly entertaining set of tunes.
Editorial Reviews 3 out of 5 stars - Against Me's third full-length album is a bizarro combination of WHO'S NEXT, an angry oi-punk record and some dude's blog....Spin (p.60) - Ranked #40 in Spin's 40 Best Albums Of 2005 - [T]hey sweat buckets of sing-along sincerity, and never stop testifying, as if every word is a last call for forgiveness.Spin (p.106) - [F]ew bands have matched the songwriting force of singer/guitarist Tom Gabel, whose crimson-faced poetics bellow like Ian MacKaye and Joe Strummer... - Grade: A-Entertainment Weekly (No. 838, p.144) - ...[T]he quartet embellish their acoustic agit-prop with hoots, hollers, hand claps, and dingy distortion, unleashing a visceral, irresistibly anthemic riot. - Grade B+ Rolling Stone
