If you like Kill Bill, blaxploitation movies, hip-hop and anime this is definitely for you.
A simple tale of revenge, told in an extremely stylish way, by studio GONZO.
Voice actors include SAMUEL L.JACKSON and RON PERLMAN.
This appeared on BRAVO last year as five seperate episodes. The DVD is the same, with each episode selectable from the menu, as usual.
Be warned however, this is not a kids cartoon, blood and bad language are here in abundance, but for the broadminded there is a lot to be liked. My copy is the region 1 version, which I would classify as equivalent to an 18 rating.
I will not contain any spoilers in the following review.
The story begins with our hero's past, travelling with his father when he is a young boy, to encounter the bad guy, who's only aim it seems, is to possess the 'number 1 headband'.
Yes, the series is as simple as that, revenge and ownership of either the number 1 or 2 headband.
Along the way Afro encounters many enemies, including teddy bears and a robotic doppelganger of himself.
There is much bloodshed here which may put some people off, but it is always done in a 'crouching tiger' way.
The animation is amazing, especially in the fight scenes which are difficult to keep track of sometimes. The colours are mostly black, white, grey and red throughout, which to me is reminiscent of the ANIMATRIX segment-'WORLD RECORD', who I think was animated by the same team. .
There is not much more to be said really, because this is a very simplistic story, told and animated very well.
Also, if you need a laugh, switch on the English subtitles (there is no japanese dub on this copy by the way), they have to be seen to be believed!
Overall, very enjoyable and well worth buying.
(thanks Rachael!)

Afro Samurai - uber cool anime fighting action

OK first things first, this is not a 'cartoon' for kids. . . It is violent, explicit and downright gory!

That said i pretty much watched the whole series back to back not to mention the fact it reeks of coolness sitting on your dvd shelf and comes with a kicking hip hop soundtrack!

Samuel L. Jackson provides the voice of our hero? Afro, a man who likes his lemonade cold and his sword sharp. He lives in a mixed up Japan, blending state of the art machina with a feudal land of yesteryear.

In this place two samurai matter: #1 who is considered a god and #2 (as denoted by his headband), who has the dubious distinction of being the only fighter with the right to fight #1 in battle. The downside being anyone else with ambitions on the #1 spot has to go through him first!

The episodes are well thought out, show-casing fast paced hack'n'slash action with blood and severed limbs flying in all directions. Sometimes the fight scenes can get a little too intense but at the end of the day Afro will win (or not!).

If you are after a bad-ass mother f#@*£r with martial arts skills to match then you would do worse than checking out the afro samurai!
