I took my children to see this movie at the cinema. We all liked the Spy Kids trilogy, and with this being from the same director, Robert Rodriguez, we were sure it would be a great movie. I have to say, it takes a lot for a movie to be so bad that I want to walk out of the cinema, but this did it for me. I sat there utterly bored for the full 90 minutes (I think it was 90 minutes, I was asleep for part of the time). Having to wear those silly 3D glasses made me feel stupid as well as bored. If I hadn't had the kids with me, I would have been out of the auditorium faster than you could say the title. Sharkboy and Lavagirl is a bit of a wet fish, with no warmth in the story whatsoever.
The story is about a boy who creates these two fantasy super-hero-type characters to escape from his dull life, where his story writing makes him the butt of his friends jokes. Sharkboy and Lavagirl eventually come to life and rescue him from his problem-filled world to take him on an 'adventure'. The movie just plods on and on. It's not exciting, it's not interesting. It seemed that Rodriguez had had a big hit with Spy Kids 3D, and wanted to use the same effects. He shouldn't have bothered. The money would have been better spent on Spy Kids 4.
You may think I disliked it just because I'm an adult, so this must be a film made for kids. When we left the cinema, I asked my children what they thought of it. Both said the same thing. They thought it was rubbish, but had sat politely through the whole movie because they thought the other one wanted to watch it all. We all felt extremely disappointed.
Every now and then, we see Sharkboy and Lavagirl in a shop on DVD. It's price seems to be going down and down. We ponder as to whether we should buy it, just to see if it is as bad as we thought. These thoughts don't last long. Once bitten, twice shy. Please, don't suffer as we did.
