This superb series was always shown during the long school Summer holidays! The haunting theme music (Robert Mellin and Gian-Pero Reverberi were responsible for the series' music score) conjures up memories of these long Summer holidays, and making sure you were ready by your TV for the next episode of this great adventure story.
Daniel Defoe's original story, set in 1697, was given 5 star treatment in this adaptation by Franco-London Films. With its excellent quality filming (on location in the Canary Islands), engaging characters, and cliff-hanging storylines, it was compulsive viewing to children who were lucky enough to watch it every Summer, from its British debut in 1965, until probably the late 1970's/early 1980's. It then vanished from circulation, and this DVD was created from one of the last remaining English version copies, located in a French film archive, from where it had been lodged in 1982.
As the main character, Robinson Crusoe (ably protrayed here by Austrian Robert Hoffman) has only himself to rely upon for several episodes, his main dialogue was recorded as his inwardly-directed 'thoughts'. The clever use of voice-over speaking these thoughts, instead of having conventional dialogue, enabled it to be translated well into many languages - it proved to be a most popular series.
This DVD brings every episode of the wonderful Adventures of Robinson Crusoe back to clear near cinema-quality life, and with these 13 great episodes come extras such as a rare interview with Hoffman, and the French version of Episode 1.
For anyone who enjoyed Summers watching these 'Adventures' as a child, and who now finds this classic series all over again as an adult, hearing that haunting melody will be sure to bring back great school Summer holiday memories!
A superb addition to anyone's collection, and a rare piece of 60's/70's nostalgia, The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe is as fresh today as it was when it was first produced in 1964!
