Album Notes
Pet Shop Boys: Neil Tennant (vocals); Chris Lowe (programming, keyboards).Additional personnel: Andy Richards, Blue Weaver, Gary Moughan, Adrien Cook, J.J. Jeczalik (programming, keyboards).Producers: Julian Mendelsohn, Stephen Hague, David Jacob, Shep Pettibone, Andy Richards.Engineers: Julian Mendelsohn, David Jacob, Dave Meegan.Recorded at Sarm West Studios and Advision Studios, London.Reappraisal is always revealing, whether for good or bad. In the case of this album, the great revelation is the magnificent orchestration, even though it is created by synthesizers and keyboards. 'One More Chance' is blissfully symphonic and the favourite hits are still irritatingly effective. The production is shared between Julian Mendelsohn, David Jacob, Shep Pettibone and Stephen Hague and is mixed to digital perfection. Ultimately this album succeeds in delivering 'pop' exactly as it should be, but played too often it will begin to grate on your friends, as you will end up humming it all day and drive them to despair.

Simply an astounding work by the PSBs

I started listening to the PSBs as a child becasue my mum used to play it, and ive loved there music ever since.

It is hard to believe that when it was first released, Rolling Stone called this "a mere pop album good for those who like pop".

This is simply an astounding work by the Boys, commercial success of which should have surprised even them, too. The singles seem to be the cream of the cake but one should listen into the album just to see how fine songwriters Neil and Christ are...it is really hard to tell my feelings about "It Couldn't Happen Here" and "King's Cross"...the ultimate pop perfection with strings, abounding orchestral manouvers and heart-felt, socially dabbing lyrics, both are glorious examples of good music, showing that pop can be soulful and heart-wrenchingly dramatic.

It is so sad that many people avoid PSB because of their gay identity. The band and all of their works are top-notch; however, they are not even included in Amazon's essentials while synthetic Depeche Mode and self-repeating New Order are called essentials. PSB are one of the best things England has given to the music industry, sort of a behind-the-curtain heroes that have a favourable influence on all their contemporary "essentials" even if the Boys jumped to the wagon after them.

Spare yourself the big mistake many are trapped into and don't overlook these guys. Start with Discography just to get warm and then move to Actually. You will be always rewarded for the rest of your life.

80's Icons - The Pet Shop Boys - Actually
Review created: 03/05/08
by:

I am so happy to have this album on CD. I had it on vinyl previously but my ex got custody - I got so carried away trying to get a replacement that I bought two copies by mistake.

I heard a track from this album on a TV show and it brought back so many memories of the times and the music that I had to track down the album and get it for my collection again.

Although the music was heavily reliant on technology, I always enjoyed it. It was and is, great to listen to and even better to dance to. My all time favourite is the track they did with Dusty Springfield but there are others that I really enjoy too. Catchy lyrics and memorable scores make the duo's music thoroughly enjoyable and they are just so redolent of the 80's with it's mixture of new romanticism, punk and techno.

The Pet Shop Boys are true icons of the times, along with other bands like Duran Duran, Yazoo, Blancmange, Bananarama, The Jam and many others - yes, some of them were very commercial but that didn't stop them being fun and great to listen to - upbeat and wonderful to dance to, or drive to. They are still as good today.

The best album the Pet Shop Boys have ever made
Review created: 17/04/07

I've always been a Pet Shop Boys fan, so when I saw my favourite Pet Shop Boys album on CD I had to have it. . . . . Actually is one of the Pet Shop Boys best albums, it's different from everything else that was in the album charts at that time (1980s).

It's fantastically orchestrated, uplifting and interesting. There's several different styles of music within this album, but they're all very Pet Shop Boysish (if there's such a word).

I've recently watched (for the first time) the movie "It Couldn't Happen Here" by the Pet Shop Boys and it uses this album as it's sound track throughout the film. Now I've finally seen the film, the videos to the songs make more sense.

I highly recommend this album, there's nothing bad to say about it, just maybe that I should have gone out and bought the CD years ago!!!

An absolute must for Pet Shop Boys fans. . . .
