First 4 Days

A light, compact and easily portable netbook with a good browser and office applications suite included. Apart from Firefox and Open Office you probably won't want to use any of the installed applications or the games. It looks attractive and the display is good quality.
If you're used to other operating systems you,ll find the installed system very inflexible and this is a problem becouse you're likely to want some other functional software.
I have no previous experience of Linux, but this is what I've discovered in the first 4 days.
First, the desktop can't be altered. Normally a standard KDE desktop can be restored, but not in this version of Linux. The result is that added applications can't be started from the desktop. The instructions contains no guidance on how to add applications, or how to start them once they are added, but an internet search will tell you.
Some applications install easily - Skype and Picasa3 are two I use which installed relatively painlessly. They are my only successes so far.
The installed media player isn't really functional, it lacks the codecs to play any of my movies. Realplayer or VLC can be downloaded as bin files, but they don't self install and although I've found out how to execute them I've not yet been able to successfully navigate to them.
Apparently Spotify will run under Wine ( a windows emulator) but again, I've not yet been able to successfully set this up.
Although an external monitor is supported it doesn't support an extended desk top, so the same thing appears on both screen, and you need a wide screen monitor or the desktop is stretched. The resolution of the monitor cannot be adjusted.
BBc iplayer will play smoothly in standard screen but jerks in full screen. This doesn't occur on an identical machine running XP. ITV iplayer requires Moonlight to be installed, but even after installing Moonlight I have not yet got it to play.
In short, some common customizations, which are effortless on other operating systems require research, time and the learning of new skills to achieve.
This is a fully functional netbook at a bargain price, but be prepared to spend some time and effort to tailor it to your personal requirements.
