I bought this for my mother to simply check her gmail and so on, while she's away from home. Wow is this device capable of so much more...
It only has a small amount of ram, it only has a low-end processory, it only has a tiny hard drive (SSD) but it blew me away. I expected sluggish performance - but it just flies, much like any higher spec PC. Why? Because it's using an optimised install of a Linux variant.
Ah Linux...
Yes, and I was worried at first about "Will it be compatible with...". Answer: Yup.
The software is Open Office, which works just fine with MS office files. Firefox is exactly the same as the Windows version. All other apps are perfect substitutes, and no learning is needed. Heck, it even ships with solitaire!
The hardware was just as good. It detected my wireless network immediately and just connected. Plugging in my camera, it found the photos. Plugging in my memory stick, it realised it contained media and prompted me accordingly.
Overall, I cannot fault this. Sure, on my big Dell laptop I can play Crysis, I can do video editting, I can rip CDs... But what percentage of the time would "Joe User" be doing that? If all you want is a computer to do average computer tasks - this does it amazingly well.
I want one of my own now!
UPDATE:
We had SLIGHT issues regarding the connection of a 3G dongle when abroad. I say slight issues, they were the sort of things that I could easily have lived with, but my non-tecchie mother was just getting needlessly annoyed at. They were not the fault of the laptop (and it's Linux OS) but a failing of the dongle supplier and no real Linux drivers.
Anyhow, I wiped the machine and installed XP Home... I was worried about performance - turns out I had little to worry about :)
XP Home, ObjectDock, AVG Antivirus and an instance of Microsoft Word, all running at the same time - with no real slowdown. Again, sure on my home PC I'd not close Word before opening Excel - but on this little laptop I would advise doing so - not only due to the power of the system, but also these kind of tools are meant for one task at a time. If you follow that rule - it runs like a charm :)
