The price of this laptop is fantastic for the power that comes with it. Its so small and portable, easy to take anywhere with you. I bought mine for university so i wont have to print out notes and faff around looking for certain things.
The OS might not be to everybodys taste though as it does use a version of linux, but then again it will get people to start using linux more often. There are some programs that you can get with linux that look far better than windows vista (i should know, i have it running on the computer in my room).
If your looking for a laptop to check e-mails with and surf the internet, write on some open office docs then this is definitely for you.
I have only had mine for a day, and i have got the advanced desktop mode running in the OS that comes with it. But this one i bought came with xp installed, this OS will bog you down alot on laptop like this as you will always need a SDHC card or usb pen for 3rd party software.
For the price i couldn't be happier. Just need to get linux mint running on it now lol.

GREAT FOR PEOPLE ON THE MOVE

I am out and about a lot, and I hate carrying heavy laptops. This has completely changed how I work, it is absolutely tiny, the netbook is as small as a mini folder and is unbelievabally light. The battery life is roughly four hours.

As I need it whenever I am outside, I went and bought a pay as you go mobile broadband dongle from O2 for just £30 and it worked perfectly with this (using xp) . It came with a USB Cable etc. Since it only has around 4GB of memory, I bought a SDHC 16GB for just £15 Memory card to expand the storage space, without having to take the thing apart.

As I use it for non media tasks and mainly for just checking mail and making notes. I think it is perfect. It isn't so good for video because of how tiny the screen is, your better off getting the 901 if you want a media netbook. But I think this is awesome and I bought it only for £130 new off ebay. A BARGAIN!!!

701 4G EEE does the business

I bought the Asus 701 for a portable university laptop, and everything about it is excellent. It uses Xandros as the default operating system and in my opinion it is great. Although you can install Windows XP onto it, i don't know why you would want to bother. Xandros is fast and works with every USB appliance i have thrown at it. The screen, although small, is very crisp and bright, and i have no problem using it for web surfing. the WiFi setup is a breeze. Battery life is good, and its just so portable.

Important advice though, many people have said their 701s get very hot and the fan takes a while to switch on. Google 'tweakeee', as this allows for many mods in Xandros, such as safely overclocking the cpu, controlling the fan times and speed. It also allows more packages to be installed, such as VLC mediaplayer and Mplayer, the GIMP image package, and the all important Firefox 3.

Using tweakeee with my 701 it now does everything and at a fraction of the cost of a standard laptop. excellent.

Its a good little laptop, that is really small and lite and has great battery life aswell as running xp well. I would recommend to get a 900 over the 701 because the 900 is the same size but has a much bigger screen, for an extra £100. The eee is with out dought the most portible laptop.

I love the size and durability. Funcionality is excellent. The only down side is the hard drive size, but this is easily overcome with an external mmory drive.
Excellent for people who travel.
Also is one of the very fe that work in a pressurized atmosphere i.e diving chambers.

It's a great bit of kit (especially with the ram upgraded) the only major criticism would be the fiddly keyboard and trackpad that needs a firm tap to register a click. But these are things you compramise on for the portability of the unit.

ASUS Eee PC 701 4G Netebook

The size and battery life are great, but I didn't care for the bundled Unix, I tried eeeBuntu too - which was much better, but some flaws in the GUI leaving windows with dialogue boxes and buttons that got hidden out of reach. I opted in the end for WindowsXP, using the XP drivers from the ASUS website - the usability has improved 10 fold, highly reccomended!

Tips: I got a 16gb SD card for UKP£17 from eBay )it's worth shopping atound...
It will also take a 2gb RAM card - but make sure the one you get is eeePc recommended - mine didn't work, and the seller is not responding....

If Webcam is not recognised - double check the BIOS - it can be turned off on there....

I love everything about it, and soon got used to the keyboard and linux OS.
Cheaper than buying an isight camera for my applemac, i use the eeepc for skype and email mainly, and for carting about when i go to visit people, robust, light and great fun. highly recommended.

this baby is fast to wake up,so you are on with the job, just port your file over to a mac or pc for printing etc,you can find hotspots and skype works well the built in webcam is a help, drawbacks are setting up printers and installing new programs independently of the asus derived installer is a novices nightmare, but other machines can do these things, the games and entertainment items are cool tux stuff particularly, keyboards small but worth everypenny.

  A Bargain Netbook
Review created: 25/08/09
by:

I paid £89.00 for this little laptop, and It does everything I want.

It surfs the net, plays music and movies and is also an accomplished solution for tose wishing to do work on the go.

The simplified Unix operating system has Firefox for browsing the internet and an Openoffice system that supports microsoft word other microsoft office file extensions. It has built in Wifi for internet on the move, which works well.

It's also fairly easy and cheap to upgrade too, It uses normal laptop ram so for £25 I've upgraded the ram from 512mb to 2GB!

This allows the little blighter to run Windows XP quite happily (although it wil run it without the upgrade). I also invested in a 16GB SDHC card for £15 which slots in the side of the machine to expand the storage.

You can also download software to increase the processor speed to 1ghz safely.

All of this together gives you a great little netbook at a low price, with a familiar interface.

The Linux based OS is good, and will suit those who aren't so good with computers, and it's also good for kids, although I've found no option to filter the internet to a child friendly place.

On the whole a great little machine, great for those who want a simple portable internet device, and also great for those who want a good, upgradeable format to create something a little more at an affordable price.

Excellent for surfing the net, doing various small tasks. The linux software is very simple and easy to use, but not so good when you are used to XP. Upgradable RAM memory from 512mb to 2GB in less than 30 seconds (very easy and cheap £20)

In all an excellent product.

  ASUS LAPTOP 4G
Review created: 21/06/09

This is a great laptop. Great for taking to the park and using it or on the train.
Excellent Solid State Hard Drive meaning bumps and knocks will not damage it.
One MAJOR problem is that if you have linux on it you cant use shockwave powered apps or games.
Thats the only downside i can think of.
Overall Very good!

Thanks for Reading :)
