If you're not a long-term AFI fan, a bit like me, then there's a good chance you'll really like this record. Without having much prior knowledge of the band to compare it, 'Decemberunderground' is one of those records that will go on to have mainstream success and, in the process, piss off all those people who have been with the band since the start. This sounds like a major label record, it looks like a major label record and, I feel, it will probably have sales fit for a major too.

I was a late starter to camp AFI, really only picking up on the band with any significance on the last record. Having always been aware of them, and how they sounded, I just never got into them - they were one of those bands I neither liked or disliked. However, having heard a few good things last time out and enjoyed single 'Miss Murder', I splashed the cash and picked this up on release date - and I'm glad I did. The production is really thick and Davey Havok's voice sounds good; there's less shouting and screaming than older fans would like I'm sure, and some of the songs seem a little toned down from what I would expect. But this is a major label band now and, taking this at face value, you'd have to expect things to be catchier and more melodic.

Despite that, 'Decemberunderground' starts off ferociously. 'Prelude' whispers atmospherically, while 'Kill Caustic' sets off like a bull in a China shop. It actually doesn't really set a tone and follow it - the rest of the album barely reaches this level of aggression and it kind of lulls you into a false sense that 'December...' will be a return to the band's roots. 'Miss Murder' has really split fans down the middle, and while I like it, I can see why other fans wouldn't.

From here though, the band slow things down a bit and show a newer side they showed glimpses of on the last record. 'Summer Shudder' and 'Love Like Winter' are both belters, while 'The Missing Frame' sounds huge. There are plenty of good songs here, which is reflected in the score i have given this record. However, I could empathise with those older fans who slate this record for being aimed at a different market. It doesn't mean I wholly agree with their sentiments, but over the years AFI have changed/developed/grown/matured. Taken for what it is, this is a very solid and enjoyable record and I feel sales will ultimately reflect that in time.

While i dont think this is AFI's best album, i has a couple of there best songs on it. Miss Murder is a classic, and love like winter is a timeless classic been listening to this since it came out and its still great.

If you liked the sing the sorrow album then you will love this alum only second to there STS as it is kinda hard to listen to if your in the wrong mood. I think if you are a long time old school AFI fan then your not gonna like this as the band as changed so much over the years.

This is one of the greatest CDs I own, And i would recommend it to anyone; I own AFI's older stuff and I love the new sound; My fave song is Miss Murder you can listen to it for hours on end; and never get tired with the catchy rythm but dark lyrics.

There new sound is as great as there old sound if anything it has improved and they have gone slightly more mainstreamed but havn't left theyre roots.

If you like My chemical Romance or Aiden youll love this!!! But you dont have to be a fan of them 'cause it is very easy and fun listening; and if you own their older albums buy the new one its great, and if you do decide to buy this I would recommend also "Sing The Sorrow" one of their older albums; its very good and great to listen whether your up or down.

I hope this review was some help to you

I am bias because I love everything AFI do but the voacl techinque is quite varied on this record perhaps not as much as it is on the art of drowning but certainly more than on shut your moth and open your eyes. I feel that it is a natural progression as that is what this band have always done naturally progressed unfortunatley in the meantime that has meant losing fans along the way but if you are a die hard you'll love this album the same as the rest, just like me!

My daughter loves AFI, so I took a chance and bought this CD. My luck was in;
she did not have this title. It was an excellent choice; the CD is fantastic!
The entire experience was great, as the seller sent the CD quickly and it was
brand new. The price was much cheaper than the shops and availability was great. Overall an enjoyable experience.

AFI Decemberunderground, a little too mellow.

Some good tracks, but overall I found this album a bit disappointing compared to earlier albums and what I was anticipating. Overall, the feel is a bit too...boy band... compared to the previous rock/punk/goth feel of Sing the Sorrow, The Art of Drowning, All Hallows Eve etc.

Fairly nice as mellow background music when you've got company, but not inspiring enough to make you want to belt out the lyrics with them, which is what I've always liked about the bands earlier stuff.

**Edited**
After owning this album for a few months, I can say that it grows on you. This is now one of the most-played CD's in my collection.

A few good tunes on this one but nothing to the quality of miss murder. better off saving your pennies and buying an xbox360 and a copy of guitar hero 3
