Album Notes Although Joni Mitchell's place in the popular imagination is forever cemented by the acoustic intimacy and confessional lyrics of her classic 1971 album BLUE, she was perhaps the most artistically fearless singer-songwriter of her generation, moving into musical directions most of her peers would never imagine. As a result, A TRIBUTE TO JONI MITCHELL is a varied and wide-ranging album covering almost all sides of her artistry. From Sufjan Stevens's chamber pop reimagining of "Free Man In Paris" to Elvis Costello's dramatic, jazzy take on "Edith and the Kingpin," the artists here are similarly unafraid to take the material into new directions. Cassandra Wilson's torch song vibe on "For the Roses" and Prince's playful complete reinvention of "A Case of You" are equally effective, while James Taylor's "River" and "Annie Lennox's "Ladies of the Canyon" stay closer to the original material. Reviews 1 of 1 people found this review helpful. As a Joni fan for 25+ years I was intrigued by this album with all its big name stars covering my favourite songs. Unfortunately the excitement barely survived the first few tracks in which it became clear that the style, vocal tone and music of these "tributes" is a very poor substitute for Joni's mellifluous dulcet tones and stylish music. The tracks that stay close to the original style are marginally better than the more "experimental" efforts, but on the whole they all range from awful to atrocious. There are no tracks that I could honestly call a good cover version - but this was a Tribute album, so perhaps that wasn't the intention and fans of Bjork and Prince etc. will be delighted with their artistic tratment of Joni's songs. Personally I'll stick with the originals, thank you. Review ID: 10000000005462162 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
