Album Notes Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, keyboards, bass); Alex Lifeson (guitar); Neil Peart (drums, percussion).Recorded at Rockfield Studios, Wales in June 1977.All tracks have been digitally remastered.Taking a cue from other art-rock groups like Yes and Genesis, Rush expressed a penchant for fantasy and science fiction themes on A FAREWELL TO KINGS. Coupling the increasingly intricate arrangements of Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson with the creative lyrics of Neil Peart, the power trio format is stretched beyond recognition on epic tracks like the sensational "Xanadu," a masterful re-telling of Kubla Kahn's "Pleasure Dome" along the river Alph. KINGS also introduced a more lyrical side of the group with "Closer To The Heart," a work of sheer beauty that would become a concert mainstay. The lesser-known rocker "Cinderella Man" and the graceful "Madrigal" offer creative tangents that explore the mysteries of the human psyche and emotions. The grand finale is a work of magnificent complexity and fantasy known as "Cygnus X-1." This multi-part suite introduces an unnamed space traveler who descends into a mysterious black hole in his rocket ship, the "Rocinante," to an uncertain end. The character would later emerge to star in the group's follow-up album, HEMISPHERES. | |||||||||||||
Reviews I never really liked Rush from the early Led Zeppelin impersonaters up tp 1990 when loaned a copy of 2112 which at the time I believed was a waste of the vinyl it was grooved onto. Recently an old friend of mine loaned me Farewell to Kings, which I thought were instructuions for a card game. After the intial listen I was pleasantly surprised how good the music was. Several plays later I was hooked and purchased my copy from an ebay seller for the princely sum of 370 pennies plus postage. Remember this is my opinion, not yours, before purchasing any music, you should at least attempt to listen to the album in question or other material by the artist. Report this review Review created: 06/11/07 by: Farewell to the Kings is classic 1970's rock from Rush, a band that have been around since the early 70's and still going strong. With Rush you get intelligent lyrics and excellent musicianship. Their style is varied but this album is dominated by clean sounding guitar melodies interspersed with heavier sounding riffs and with a touch of synth, especially on Cygnus X-1. There are only 6 tracks but two, Xanadu and Cygnus X-1 are over the 10 minute mark and qualify as epic rock tracks. This album continued the rich vein of form from their previous album, 2112.
