I decided to buy this DVD after one or two film critics raved about it - not always the safest recommendation, particularly when you're talking about nearly 2 hours of subtitles, but I took the plunge - and it was worth it! Very similar to Full Metal Jacket (but true), the film tells the story of a draft of recruits as they go through boot camp, learn to bond and to fight - and then get plunged straight into front-line Afghanistan. The battles are brilliantly staged, but the characters are also beuatifully brought out by a really talented bunch of young Russian actors - which makes it all the more shocking when one or two of them are taken out as casually as you'd swat a fly. Don't buy this for an in-depth analysis of what the Russians were doing there - but it to see what happens to a bunch of young guys when they're dumped in hell, or just to enjoy a good old-fashioned war movie!
