A good film. Basically its 'Full Metal Jacket' but instead of the Yanks in Vietnam its the Russians in Afghanistan. Based on a true battle of that particular conflict. Enjoyable if you like war films and have no problem with subtitles. I read a review in a magazine and I like a bit of World Cinama every now and again as break from the usual holywood blockbusters.

A well-made, thought-provoking film about an event that's little known here in the West. Well-worth watching.

to find this film gem in digital format. If you watch this in widescreen format, it really does the battle scene great justice; coupled with surround sound, you'll be gripped by the amazing cinematography. I would recommend the director's cut that includes scenes about the relationship between the lead character and his estranged wife and helps you to understand the motivation behind his decision. The run time is 183 minutes for the directors cut an

  Great film
Review created: 28/06/08

This is a really good film with better character development than some other war films. Its nice to see that Russia can make films like this which can rival Hollywood which itself can make great war films. The battle sequences are well staged and the sound is good quality.

A really good film that is not often on TV. DVD set has plenty of background bits and these add to the film. Very well made...maybe even better than Black Hawk Down and others like it.

I decided to buy this DVD after one or two film critics raved about it - not always the safest recommendation, particularly when you're talking about nearly 2 hours of subtitles, but I took the plunge - and it was worth it! Very similar to Full Metal Jacket (but true), the film tells the story of a draft of recruits as they go through boot camp, learn to bond and to fight - and then get plunged straight into front-line Afghanistan. The battles are brilliantly staged, but the characters are also beuatifully brought out by a really talented bunch of young Russian actors - which makes it all the more shocking when one or two of them are taken out as casually as you'd swat a fly. Don't buy this for an in-depth analysis of what the Russians were doing there - but it to see what happens to a bunch of young guys when they're dumped in hell, or just to enjoy a good old-fashioned war movie!

  Vietnam for the USSR
Review created: 30/01/08

9th Company is in my opinion one of the very best war films ever made. In terms or realism, excitment and the capture of real life horror it rises above the usual Hollywood standard. This is the most sucessful film in Russian history and rightly deserves to be so. It the story of the Afghan war through the eyes of the Russian and as such is unmissable. Buy this film, read the subtitles or learn the Russian.

Russian film with english subtitles about Russian soldiers training and then fighting in Afganistan in the 80s. Quite a hollywood feel to it despite being Russian made. You end up feeling sympathy for the Russians which is odd as for years they were our Cold War opponents. Plenty of blood and guts and action scenes go on and on. YOu get used to the subtitles so dont be put off its a good film.
