Henry Roth (Sandler), the local marina veterinarian, only dates tourists because he’s afraid of commitment - that is, until he meets Lucy (Barrymore). Unfortunately, Lucy lost her short-term memory months ago in a car accident, and for her, each day is October the 13th. She follows the same routine every day - breakfast at the same restaurant, pineapple-picking with her dad, and eventually bed time, where sleep wipes away her short-term memory. Henry, however, refuses to be forgotten, and as his puppy love matures, he embarks on a quest to restore her memory, or at least be a part of her everyday routine. But vying for Lucy’s attention isn’t always easy. Henry explores various approaches before making a video for Lucy to watch every morning, reminding her of who she is and what she’s doing...

This film has fast become one of my favourites. It's had quite a bit of critism but I think this is undeserved. This film is brilliant in it's simplicity & both Adam Sandler & Drew Barrymore give wonderful performances. If you want to watch a truely excellent romcom then watch this.

It’s romantic, and that’s the best you’ll get out of it
Review created: 09/07/06

Drew Barrymore suffers a short term memory problem - every night her day is wiped clear, so she re-lives everyday the same day. Adam Sanders got to be ingenious to have the same girl fall in love with him everyday. That’s the best of the movie, it’s romantic, even moving, and as she puts it every evening: ‘Nothing beats a first kiss!’

But forget about the rest. Poor dialogs, cheap directing, narrow script. The film starts with trying to be funny and falls completely through. Then it tries to be moving and that’s better. If you can hold it long enough the tone changes and Drew Barrymore will probably hook your feelings (she’s actually brilliant at it). Then you end up having a good time.

Behind that there is the seriousness of the memory impairment, with the dramatic consequences for the friends, family, boyfriend, and for the patient. To that regard the films shows that when there’s no solutions to problems, well love can be the solution. So that’s about a bunch of people who love each others, and that’s just how they work it out. And nowadays, a bunch of people who love each others, that’s good to see, even on movies.

So if you like it romantic and not complicated, you’ll enjoy this one.

EXCELLENT FILM ONE FOR ALL TO ENJOY!!

Adam Sandler's previous track record has been shaky, with some underwritten comedies (Anger Management) and movies that failed to find a mainstream audience (Big Daddy). 50 firsts Dates makes an improvement by not only providing an original script that lends itself to both comedic double entrees and depth, courtesy of Drew Barrymore's stunning performance, with convincing pathos. Sandler brings another great character to the screen, especially since this story provokes just as many tears as guffaws. This is possibly Sandler's best film and boasts great comedic turns from Rob Scheider and Sean Astin. This film really does work on all levels, and considering I'm not a fan of the genre. Combining an impressive supporting cast with a sprightly running time and hip soundtrack, and you have one of the best comedies of recent years. Highly reccomended.

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore star together for the first time since The Wedding Singer in the funniest romantic comedy of the year.

Henry Roth (Sandler) lives an enviable life in a Hawaiian paradise, enjoying the company of countless beautiful women with no strings attached...until he meets Lucy (Barrymore).
He and Lucy hit it off from the word go, but unfortunately Lucy has short term memory loss and fails to remember Henry the next day.
But a man in love will go to any lenghts to win over the girl of his dreams, and if that means having to find new and imaginative ways of romancing Lucy every single day, then Henry's up for the challenge.

Great movie, Sandler is very funny in this, with a good supporting cast.
You will reconise a few faces from his previous films.
Definatley one to watch!

  Adam Sandler Does It Again
Review created: 31/08/06

He has a knack does Adam Sandler of doing films that have no importance, they are just funny. Take Little Nicky, Waterboy & Happy Gilmore for example.
What about 50 first Dates?

I think it is his best film. He plays a bordering on insane guy who everyday, wins the heart (or not on some days) of Drew Barrymore who suffers from short term memory loss.
'Nothing Beats A First Kiss'
Sandler gets loads of them, and then the next day is the same.
But it takes Sandler days, weeks, months before he brings himslef to tell Drew what really happened, the reason why she cannot remember what happened in the accident.
Then from then on it is a happy go lucky love story of how they find solace and comfort with one another.
If you like Sandler, or if you like comedy romances then this is most definitley for you.
I'm sure 10 second Tom would agree!

50 first date is definately Adam Sandlers best film by far! When I read the write up of it I did not fancy it at all but it was on sky one night and there was nothing else on so I though why not! That first night I was in stitches, and the second and the third and so on! I can not remember how many times I have watched it, Drew Barymore is really good and so is Sean Astin but for me its Rob Schneider who makes the film he is frickin hilarious!( see what i did there ) Basically the plot is Lucy (Drew) was in an accident and has no short term memory so she thinks everyday is the day of the accident (A sunday, her dads birthday)because this is only what she can remember. Henry ( Adam ) meets and becomes infatuated with her on the first date, he does not realize untill the next day when he meets her again and asks her to smell his fishy fingers (you will understand when you watch) and she freaks out!( as you would )He then has to make Lucy like him everyday over and over again ( he has ingenious ways of doing this )The film is more of a comedy than a chick flick which is what I thought it was, I can honestly recommend this film to all! Even if you dont like Adam Sandler you have to give this film a try, its too good too miss!

A few of my friends have criticised this film saying it isn't as good as Adam Sandler's previous films. The difference with this is that it has a combination of Sandler's usual slapstick comedy and tearful romance that is measured equally throughout the film. The first time I watched this film I remembered I laughed out loud in a few places, and so did my girlfriend when I showed it to her on DVD the other day.

We finally get to see Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore reunite from the great romantic comedy The Wedding Singer which 50 First Dates may not be as good but is still a film that should be added to your collection for all those Sandler fans out there. 50 First Dates does open with a disgusting joke when a sea lion vomits over a woman but I assure you it is safe to eat your food after that scene as it goes more into stomach friendly territory. The storyline is quite clever with some excellent jokes that I couldn't have done better myself, but the jokes still aims for the teenagers rather than adults which is a shame since when the serious moments do kick in they are rather sad and the sudden ending to the film, which I think they could have done a better job with, did make me have a few tears in my eyes. The whole premise is sad but the filmmaker makes us laugh with instead of laughing at the condition that Drew Barrymore's character has. There are also some other wacky characters that provide a few of the laughs along the way.

Don't listen to your friends if they say this film is rubbish because if you liked Sandler's The Waterboy and Happy Gilmore then you will love this. It's a shame it doesn't go on long enough and is one of those films that will shock you of how the time manages to fly by. There are a few rude moments that are laughable value but again this film is aimed more for the teens.

I heard that it was a good film as some of my students told me. It relates to their course. It is about girl with anterograde amnesia. It was a good, lighthearted film to watch in its own right. I decided to buy it because I was able to get it fairly cheap off ebay.

This is the best film that I have got in my DVD collection. Brilliant romantic comedy that will have you laughing and crying. Drew Barrymore looks as stunning as ever in this film, and the on screen chemistry between Barrymore and Sandler is fantastic!

Film Synopsis: (For those who dont already know it)

A romantic comedy set in Hawaii, stars Adam Sandler as Henry, an arctic wildlife vet, and Drew Barrymore as Lucy, a young woman with a unique memory disorder. Henry has been spending his spare time breaking the hearts of female tourists, while Lucy has been waking up every morning thinking it's Sunday - of last year. Once they meet, Henry sets out to win her love - everyday.

Buy this one and you'll love it!! You might start watching it everyday, not to remind yourself like Lucy, but cause you want to be touched by this great film all over again!

wot a fab film!! absolutely love drew barrymore films and this was no disappointment. it's the sort of film that the more you watch it the better it gets. the woman/man in the film to this day still couln't believe it was either! checked them out on wikepedia and it is actually a WOMAN! nevertheless, very good film and a feel good ending without the lucy character changing her personality - although to be niggly the first time she was told she had a 24 hour amnesia she spent half the day raging against it - by the end she could cope with just watching a video for 30 mins! great film - and yes, obviously, i've watched it too darn much!!

Superb movie and I'm happy to recommend it for anyone who is a fan of Adam Sandler. You get what you see with this movie, just like his previous work - no new benchmarks are broken - but if you love The Wedding Singer etc, you should be buying this. The HD version does improve the experience. You will go back to it time and time again. Both sad and extremely funny, like all his typical previous movies. It needs to be in your collection, and lets not forget Drew's part! She's a babe.

  A gentle love story

I didn't know much about the film when I bought it but the concept of someone having to chat up a girl as if it was the first time every day, I found intriguing. The film is a gentle funny love story, the animal scenes are quite amazing and though some of the characters over act a bit, it's generally well done.

Quite a nice feel good film that stayed with me for several days, I'll almost certainly watch it again in a month or two.

Scatological and sentimental, satirical and sincere, 50 FIRST DATES reunite THE WEDDING SINGER's Adam Sandler with Drew Barrymore in this romantic comedy about the power of love and short-term memory loss in Hawaii. Henry Roth (Sandler), the local marina veterinarian, only dates tourists because he's afraid of commitment--that is, until he meets Lucy (Barrymore). Unfortunately, Lucy lost her short-term memory months ago in a car accident, and for her, each day is October the 13th. She follows the same routine every day--breakfast at the same restaurant, pineapple-picking with her dad, and eventually bed time, where sleep wipes away her short-term memory. Henry, however, refuses to be forgotten, and as his puppy love matures, he embarks on a quest to restore her memory, or at least be a part of her everyday routine. But vying for Lucy's attention isn't always easy. Sandler explores various neophytic approaches before making a video for Lucy to watch every morning, reminding her of who she is and what she's doing. The film includes a trademark Sandler ballad as Henry serenades Lucy with his ukulele and a series of familiar salacious puns. Rob Schneider plays Henry's best friend, a goofy native stoner whose physical hijinks earn many laughs, and a cameo by Dan Aykroyd as Lucy's doctor rounds out the cast.
