David Lynch - Twin Peaks - Fire Walk With Me
Review created: 10/01/10(updated 22/01/10)

I first decided to buy Fire Walk With Me, after having watched the entire multi-part TV series of Twin Peaks. Twin Peaks remains the most influential televisual series I have ever seen, and I would put my neck on the line by saying that I believe it always will be. Fire Walk With Me details the last seven days of Laura Palmer, the pivotal deceased character around whom the story of Twin Peaks evolves. I will not attempt to explain Twin Peaks, as viewing alone can only satisfy your curiosity, and even then, it will arouse a fair amount of speculation and intrigue that will undoubtedly remain with you for some time to come. In isolation, Twin Peaks - Fire Walk With Me could be something of a buzz for fans of the avant-garde, but I would wholly recommend viewing the series first, in order to make sense of the characters and their endeavours, even if their cumulative evolution leaves you puzzled. Frankly, you would have to be something of a fool to even suggest that you understood the series in entirety, but don't let this 'open-to-interpretation' premise put you off. Both the TV series and Fire Walk With Me are visually stunning, cinematically gripping and damned intriguing, and you will be taken with the character interaction, suggestive film-work and mysterious progression nonetheless. Whilst Fire Walk With Me is explanatory in essence, it leaves enough stones unturned and enough loose ends fraying to keep the mystery alive, and ensures that David Lynch's benchmark unwillingness to explain things, remains intact. In my humble opinion, David Lynch is a genius. You will not regret buying Fire Walk With Me, regardless of your angle. Mr Lynch's creative and innovative take on things, will leave you with a curious set of reactions - odd bedfellows of sadness, empathy, laughter, intrigue, respect, contempt, desire, repulsion, fear, joy, horror and a whole host of other neurophysiological responses you wouldn't have thought cinematically possible. Now that's my idea of a good night in :) Whatever you think - you'll think something, so perhaps this is what makes David Lynch the iconically respected character that he is ? Do yourself a favour - buy this DVD, turn off the lights, forget all the cliches and plot devices, and be entertained. This most memorable of films will draw the open-minded viewer into a pursuit of all things Lynch, and no doubt cause a paradigm shift in your viewing and appreciative expectations. The best prequel I've ever seen, and in no way a detriment to a strong forerunner. David Lynch at his mind-bending, thought-provoking best. The Owls Are Not What They Seem - you have been warned.
