Platinum Soul Legends
A good general overview. It's a bit short on the early classics: no Sam Cooke (!), no (solo) William Bell, and only the mega pop hit (Dock of the Bay) from Otis Redding for example.
If some of the less distinctive later tracks made way for these, then this would be a 5-star album. But at this price, it's still irreseistible. So buy this and then buy "Otis Blue", a good Sam Cooke compilation, or just his "Mr Soul", and some William Bell and maybe a bit more Steve Cropper. Then you'll be home and dry!
