Album Notes Includes liner notes by William Hogeland. In the pre-rock & roll era, American popular song took its cue from Broadway musicals to an enormous extent. The great Tin Pan Alley songwriters who labored to bring a show to life were simultaneously creating the standards that would become the meat of pop music from the 1920s through the '50s. Like his peers, Frank Sinatra drew the bulk of his repertoire from this deep, reliable well, and that fact is highlighted on this collection of Sinatra tunes taken from shows both legendary (OKLAHOMA, SHOW BOAT) and more obscure (THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE, LOUISIANA PURCHASE).The sound quality on this two-disc collection leaves much to be desired, but the selection and performances are top-notch. Though discographical information is sketchy, these recordings hail from the early part of Sinatra's career, and its a joy to hear his graceful voice float along the elegant melodic arc of such standards as "Begin the Beguine" and "Someone to Watch Over Me." While Sinatra's original albums from this period are at no loss for Broadway-derived material, it's a nice conceptual turn to have so many of them gathered together as a whole. | |||||||||||
