Football mad Jess is 18, smart, beautiful and can bend a ball better than any boy she knows. She's set her heart on playing for a top women's footie team, but there's one problem: her strict parents want her to settle down with a nice indian boy and learn how to cook.

Flying in the face of her parents disapproval, Jess and her best mate Jules make a name for themselves in the Beautiful Game, but then love rears it's head for both of them in the form of their fit (in more ways than one) coach Joe.

Jess has a tough choice-her best friend or a gorgeous bloke. Whats a girl to do?

With a great cast that also includes Juliet Stevenson and Shazney Lewis, Bend it like Beckham is a hilarious comedy about friendship, family and football that will have you cheering from the sidelines!

Perfect British film. Made me so homesick the first time I saw it when living in Australia, nearly jumped on a plane back again! A classic of its time.

This is a very entertaining film. It is the sort of film that has family appeal. It is relevent to our multi cultural society and is sensitive to some of the dilemmas facing young people. There is some mild bad language and a sprinkling of love interest. It keeps the watcher interested and is funny.

The purchase of the DVD gave me an insight into the Sikh tradition which will hopefully have a bearing on the O.U. examination I will be taking.

who wants to cook when you can bend a ball like bekham

Bend It" is a film about tackling adversity.

A major focus of the film is Jess tackling her family's adversity to her playing football. Her parents want her to get married at age 17/18, to a "good Indian boy" and her Mum wants Jess to learn how to cook a "full Indian meal".

Another theme of adversity, although one not given much focus, is racism. This spans Jess's father recounting his negative experience with an amateur English cricket club; Jess explaining her parent's insistence that she can only marry an Indian boy - not white, black or Muslim; the coach mentioning that's in being Irish he encountered racism as a player, and Jess being called a "Paki" by an opponent.

The football scenes are great fun, and there's plenty of comedic moments in the film. The scene near the end - at Jess's parents house, where they grant her permission to go to America - is a tear-jerker. Plus something happens at the airport to complete a feel-good ending!

On top of all this are excellent contemporary references of that 2001/2002 era, to Spice Girls ("there's a reason why Sporty Spice is the only one without a fella!"), David Beckham in his Manchester United days, and the short-lived professional women's football league within the USA.

Great film. Great fun.

Bend It Like Beckham (DVD 2002)

Bend It Like Beckham is an excellent film, and I particularly like the way the producers have taken two completely different cultures, and brought them both together using their common love of football. Two girls, from completely opposite backgrounds both want to play football, but families object to it. The comedy side of the film is amazing, especially the way Jesses mom obsesses over cooking Aloo Gobi, and how Jules's mom thinks her daughter is a lesbian! Another great moment in the film is when all the indian family meets for a religious occasion, and everybody's mobiles go off at the same time. I think the best part is the ending, when both families let their daughters fly off to America to play football, and I think it's lovely the awy Jules remains friends with Jess the whole way through the film, and the team support her, and try to help her fit football around her family life.

  Very touching story
Review created: 05/06/08
by:

I bought this film because I missed watching it. It's absolutely fun and touching and there are moments were I caught myself thinking that watching this film would make my day perfect.

The story is very touching. This girl wants to play football at a local team but her traditional parents do not think it is a good idea. Sounds very simple but, as the film develops, it becomes a tale about being who you are and pursuing your dreams. All that without being cheesy and cliched. It's one of those films that actually make you think about your own life and how you are the one responsible for it. It's really a mood lifter!

The acting is amazing and the film is really fun, great for that moments when you just need something to lift you up, something to make you stand up for your own way of life.

I recommend this film specially for young people who are deciding what they want to do with their lives. They can easily identify with the main characters. But of course anyone of any age can have fun with this film.
