I think this is a bit of a man's film, for god's sake don't sit down to watch it with the wife and kids. You'll see more kills in this film than the next 300 you might watch, not to mention the serious maiming !
This true story centres on a crack army of 300 Spartans facing a huge Persian force, the Spartans gather in a small pass so their enemy can only advance a few at a time and boy they can work a sword !
I know this is over dramatised and although this did happen it didn't happen quite like this but that aside this Greek version of Zulu will not disappoint.

This film is very poor.. We only purchased it to see what it was like, and I'm glad I didn't waste money at the Cinema. It can only entertain the "Fantasy" fans. For as Historical fact it borders on the plain laughable.. Xerces in Gold lurex, Black American, Mutli body piercings, and a loking like a vary camp Gay Icon I think not..
The Spartans dress is wrong.. Wheres the Bronze body armour, Leather gillets and white tunics??? The Helmets and shields fine.. The Swords are pure "Fantasy"!!!! As for the "Immortals".. Clothes and Weapons straight out of Medieval Japanease history! And as for the face masks, revealing warriors that that look like the "Awks" out of "Lord of The Rings"!! Frankly was this director on drugs!!!! Utter Nonsense!!!!

My son and I watched this Movie and were amazed and enthralled at the quality of the special effects. The whole Movie was a terrific piece of adult entertainment and was full of action all through with the Actors performing superbly, and the scenes were a joy to watch.I'm 62 and my son is 26 and we both enjoyed this Move. The Actors didn't try to change their voices and that made for more reality to it.5-Stars ***** for this one,no worries, don't miss it.

  300 Surreal filming
Review created: 05/08/08

Having spent many years visting Greece during holiday season I spoke to a well educated Greek gentleman on the why's an wherefore's of this film. After pointing out the fact that the film was based on historical records and that the Spartans had never seen Elephants before or any other creature picked up by Xerxes on his travels, it is hardly surprising that there are many odd creatures in this film representing what was clearly incredulous to the Spartan army.

This put a different complexion on a film that I considered a fantastic action movie filmed and finished in an almost cartoon like surreal backdrop. I'm not convinced that Davis Wenham was the right choice for the part he played and Gerard Butler sounded very like Sean Connery at times but was nevertheless a very enjoyable movie.

WOW!

Girls this is so not a guy film only, there are more rippling torsos than you know what to do with and Gerard Butler is just simply divine to say the least. Very insightful and a passionate portrayal of a real life event.

Well worth watching!

300 - The Spartans vs The Monsters
Review created: 19/07/08

I decided to buy it because I like historical costume epics like Ben Hur etc. This film was rather disappointing because it seemed like the Spartans were fighting against a load of malformed "human monsters" if that's the right way of putting it? The Persian Invincibles resembled Darf Vader and the traitorous Spartan a hunchbacked Ferengi out of Star Trek. The slow motion battle scenes reminded me of these martial arts films. Agh gotcha!
Very critical I know, but I did sit through and watch it.

  300 (with Gerard Butler)
Review created: 22/06/08

This is very much a "man's" movie - and probably has only marginal entertainment value for the ladies - but that's OK, isn't it? (After all, what's Sex and the City got for the blokes?) So .. given that premise, this movie is 100%. Butler is magnificent as the Spartan leader - indeed the movie could be used as a high quality training aid for effective leadership - the character is such that all of his warrior subordinates are entirely trusting of his judgement and would gladly follow any command. He leads from the front, is supremely aggressive towards the enemy but assertive yet sensitive towards his comrades. The action scenes suitably inspire an adrenaline rush in the audience, and the special effects are not so improbably that they compromise suspension of disbelief. This movie is a future cult classic.

In Ancient Greece, a group of 300 Spartan warriors are all that stand against an invincible army. A vivid, bloodthirsty adaptation of the graphic novel by 'Sin City' creator Frank Miller, from the director of the 2004 remake of Dawn Of The Dead
The legendary Battle of Thermopylae may have first made it to the screen in 1962's The 300 Spartans, but this new cinematic incarnation of the story is an historical epic unlike any other. The latest example of 'virtual studio' filmmaking, where actors are shot against blue screens and sparse sets while the surrounding environments are generated through CGI, it's a stylised action adventure that takes the sword and sandal genre and pushes it in an exaggerated, dream-like direction. Transferring the dynamic visuals of the original graphic novel by Frank Miller and Lynne Varley to the big screen, in a similar manner to previous Miller adaptation Sin City, the result is a delirious, turbo-charged roar of a movie that plays like Spartacus on bizarre drugs.
Set in 480 BC, the story kicks off with an introduction to the kingdom of Sparta, where a civilisation centred around combat has created some of the finest warriors ever seen, and is ruled over by the fiercely honourable King Leonidas (Butler). When a messenger arrives from the tyrannical god-king Xerxes, telling Leonidas that Sparta will be the next kingdom to fall unless it surrenders, the king's immediate reaction is to kick the news bearer and his bodyguards down the nearest well.

Unfortunately, he soon finds Xerxes has bribed Sparta's politicians and religious elders, and thanks to this, Leonidas is now forbidden by law from unleashing the country's army against Xerxes. Still refusing to surrender, the king takes 300 volunteers and marches towards the Hot Gates at Thermopylae, a narrow cliff pass that's also the only route into Sparta for any invading army. Here, it doesn't matter that Leonidas's forces are massively outnumbered, and as Xerxes' army arrives, the fighting skills of the 300 Spartans are soon being tested in a series of gigantic confrontations with near-unstoppable opponents.

Right from the outset, the film makes occasional nods towards accuracy and realism, but is mostly happy to abandon these elements in favour of creating a truly mythological version of the battle. The whole film is like an exaggerated remix of reality, from the leperous, sex-crazed priests to the troll-like berserkers and inhuman 'Immortals' in Xerxes' army. Combining all this with the graphic novel's imagery, and director Zack Snyder's near-expressionist approach to the action, the results make recent attempts at the historical genre like Troy or King Arthur look pathetically feeble by comparison.

Once the combat kicks off, it's a symphony of breathtakingly gory action, as bare flesh is punctured by spears, heads are lopped off in close-up and the screen is regularly showered in blood. Coming across like a blend of modern action movies and the heavily stylised world of 1920s-era silent cinema, 300 doesn't reach the sadistic excesses of Robert Rodriguez's take on Sin City, and isn't quite as rigorous in following the original graphic novel, yet still perfectly captures the book's energetic widescreen flavour.

Verdict
A blood-soaked, aggressive tale of heroism and courage against all odds, 300 makes up in energy and eye-popping visuals for what it might lack in subtlety.

The film was excellent. The lead character will draw you in and make every person want to fight the Turkish army alongside him. The actor was wonderful in this part, could'nt have been better casting. All the actors (male and female) were extreamly believable and became their roles. A truly magnificent achievement by the whole production.

If you've seen the trailer, you know that the movie looks full of obscenely ridiculous action sequences that would kick unholy amounts of arse. The movie is a two hour, R-rated version of that trailer. It inspires many an exagerrated obscene comment, but it's completely deserving in doing so. 300 is adapted from the graphic novel by Frank Miller.

It tells the story of the 300 Spartan warriors led by their bad ass King Leonidas (Gerard Butler), as they stand up against the tens of thousands of Persians awaiting to conquer and absorb Sparta into the empire. The Persians are lead by Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), who figures himself a god among men. And the movie is about their battle. Sure, there's a fair amount of political intrigue amongst the Queen (Lena Headey, who is quite yummy) and a traitor among the Sparta elite (Dominic West), but really the movie is about the battle, which is a technically accomplished series of fight scenes like I have yet to see before. Seriously. You'll want to compare them to scenes from Lord of the Rings or Gladiator, but you'd be wrong. Oh my, you will be wrong. One example would be the long, unbroken shot of Leonidas fighting in the first battle, the one that doesn't cut and keeps speeding up and slowing down, was quite invigorating, and a stand out among many great epic battle sequences.

Jaw dropping, and I might even be so inclined to say awe inspiring, battle sequences. The visuals themselves, even when not involving bloodshed or carnage, are a sight to behold. Much like the previous Miller adaptation Sin City, 300 was made with generous help from all digital environments. I don't know how faithful the film is to the graphic novel, but I can say that it looks damn fine, like the novel had come to life. Although what I viewed tonight was a workprint, most of the effects and digital rendering had been completed, and it never looked obnoxiously fake at all. It's a beautiful looking movie. The actors do well for their roles, with Gerard Butler as a very convincing badass leader, even though he doesn't need to keep shouting everything as if it were a grand statement. But you know what? It doesn't matter because I'd follow him into battle any day.

Mainly because I know that he could pretty much single-handedly take care of everyone for me, but he'd know I have his back. Zach Snyder, he of Dawn of the Dead ('04) fame, directs 300 with a sure hand, telling a rock solid tale of honor and valor and mostly about kicking ass. Looking back upon the film, I'm starting to pick up on some themes that are a little freaky if you stop to think about them. (Spartans discard imperfect babies, so as to keep their army full of the strongest. This leads one to realize that the Spartans are kind of creating their own master race. And when you think of creating a master race, Nazis also come to mind. And yet, we the viewer are supposed to identify and support these Nazis. These superior soldiers who, by the way, all kind of look like He-Man action figures, and made me feel inadequate about myself.)

Thank you for taking your time to read my review!

Loved it, loved it, loved it!

The comic style colouring for the film really helped to create an artistic atmosphere and the costume design added to the fantasy of 300. The legend was well told in the screenplay and the major parts were very well acted. I do think this is probably a film for the boys, but is still a great addition to a modern DVD collection.

  300 HD DVD
Review created: 10/05/08

A great film, very nice blood and gore with a superb storyline, based on real events. With HD/Bluray dont think theres anything wrong with your disc, the film is meant to be slightly grainy and isnt really what youd expect from a HD film. It is better than standard DVD quality but you wont get the sharpness youd expect since its meant to be nitty gritty. If you like people getting stabbed, limbs chopped off and beheadings then youll love this film. Probably worth renting rather than buying (unless its cheap as chips) as its a watch twice kinda film then youll have lost interest. Worth watching not worth buying.

FRANK MILLERS GRAPHIC NOVEL COMES TO LIFE
Review created: 23/04/08

For those who know nothing about the origins of this movie, I urge you to Google Frank Miller 300 graphic novel. This movie is the vision of the comic book writer/artist and now film director, Frank Miller. Famous for Batman and Daredevil comics produced in the last twenty years approximately. The film is purely based on his comic, NOT on HISTORY! Obviously the fantastical stylistic elements which are artistically rendered in this movie, are his vision of his graphic novel, come to life on the big screen. For those of you who want to learn more about the Real HISTORICAL events, I recommend you read a book, watch the Discovery Knowledge channel, or watch the previous movie (also a fictional account), titled "The 300 Spartans". The CGI fantasy elements are purely for visual indulgences and the entire look of the movie is Frank Millers artistic expression. I personally loved the movie, and thought it was hugely entertaining. The fights were brilliantly choreographed by Jeet Kune Do experts(thats Bruce Lee's style), and the visual eye candy was completely over the top, you had to enjoy it. The limited storyline of course is just a vehicle for the blood and violence, heroism and macho bravery that splashes across the screen. Of course in history, the Greek idea of machismo involved being compulsory homosexual, which the writers left out, but hinted at in the movie. The physiques of the actors were obviously the main draw for the women (and the gays?), in this movie, whilst the action and battles were the reason for the men. The question remains, does this movie satisfy? For a no brainer, yes. For a more intellectual movie, get out The Shooter with Mark Wahlberg.

I think the reason some disliked this movie, was because they did not understand the narrative style and the visual indulgences of the graphic novel. All Frank Miller fans and new fans of his other movie, Sin City, will love this film.

This movie could have been stronger plot-wise, and some scenes omitted, like the one where his wife offers herself to the traitorous council member. As if. This is a blemish on the otherwise honourable theme of the movie. But Frank Miller must have chosen to put that scene in for a reason( don't know what).

All the actors look good, and the make up on the monsters is convincing. The CGI breathtaking and the cinematic epic look of the movie is top notch.

The DVD: 2 disc special edition

The DVD comes with many special features that reveal behind the scenes methods of film making, CGI and also interviews from the actors and stunt team. Even Gerard Butler talks about his training and preparation for the movie regarding his physique. The only thing the DVD seemed to lack was the fantastic trailers which advertised the movie. There were 3 that I saw on the internet, and they were mind bogglingly brilliant. Made everyone excited in anticipation for the movie (the fans mainly). But only one is played in one of the many documentaries on the DVD. But apart from this, I would still give the movie and the DVD 5 out of 5, because you get so many extras on the DVD.

There are full length documentaries on each aspect of making this movie, such as bringing the comic(graphic novel) to life, the screenplay development, creating the blue screen battles. Too many to mention. I bought mine from ebay for £6.01 including p&p. You can get it from VIRGIN, HMV, Amazon.com, DVD.co.uk for about £8.00 for the 2 disc or £6.00 for the single
