A very British and very good zombie bloodfest
Review created: 18/06/08(updated 18/06/08)

28 days later refers to the time after a group of monkeys infected with the "Rage" virus in a distrubed laboratory are released by protesters. This proves to be a big mistake as the monkeys move quickly to attack any living thing that they see, passing on the virus quickly and easily through contact either by blood or by saliva.

Within a small amount of time the infection has spread throughout the country and only a handful of people have managed to escape and survive temporarily in the chaos. Cue Jim, who waks in an abandoned hospital and quickly discovers he is one of just a handful that still exist.

The 10min scene of him walking through a completely deserted London is visually stunning. All of London is wrecked and empty as he feeds on snacks from vending machines through some very crude product placement throughout this British zombie epic. Jim soon meets up with a couple of other survivors who quickly teach him how dangerous this new world is with The Infected roaming the streets. They show him the ruthlessness required to survive, even if that means killing a close friend or relative if they get infected with the virus as it strikes within 20 seconds. The group of 3 quickly becomes 2 as they have to kill the infected member of their group, but they soon find a couple of other survivors in the form of a father and daughter who aid them in reaching Manchester via an abandoned cab where "safety" and "protection" exist according to a radio recording broadcast by a group of healthy soldiers from the British Army who inform them that reaching them will aid their survival.

But all is not as it seems in this new world as the Army have become corrupt in this new and dangerous way of life, and they try to hold hostage the two girls from the group to aid "The future" which can only exist through the existence of women. Jim escapes and helps free them from the madness inside the army base, releasing the imprisoned zombie to kill off the corrupt soldiers. They eventually escape 28 days later after making a huge "Hello" sign on the fields in view of an aeroplane that takes them to safety as the ending credits loom.

This is an excellent zombie movie, in actual fact there isn't as much violence as i expected although some scenes are pretty graphic. However, "28 days later" is much better at portraying life after such an event than the new Will Smith movie "I Am Legend" which seemingly rips the whole idea off completely. This movie is very good indeed, excellently made and with some truely breathtaking scenery of London without life. At times it is slow-moving but you are quickly brought to the edge of your seat again (or behind a cushion) as the next attack awaits. Very British, very gory, but very good.

If you like zombie movies, this is well worth viewing.

The feel of this film is pretty unique.

The fear-factor in this film, as other reviewers have said, isn't from the zombified humans, it's from the 'normal' humans. Sorry to repeat what has been said, but the "I promised them women" line is the scariest in the film and one of the most disturbing I've ever seen.

This is a stylistic masterpiece and is one of the few films that I can watch over again.

As a Brit it is very eerie to see scenery which is so familiar, in such a different way. This is a more "real" horror film than most with characters you can actually believe.

As a huge John Wyndham fan, I can see parallels with Day of the Triffids, but that isn't a bad thing. This feels like a modern adaptation of one of my favourite books.

This DVD always seems to be in the budget range - buy it, I don't think you'll regret it.

I had never seen this film before i bought it off of ebay, but it was really good. Being an english film 28 days later gives a new and 'un-american' twist to the appocalyptic horror thriller. The film does occassionally look as though it was made for television, this adds though to a more authentic and realistic product. When I watched the film I felt that I was watching something new and different whilst still being entertained. You don't quite know what is going to happen at the end of the film (could go anyway) and there is an alternative ending on the bonus features that is interesting. I would recommend this dvd to anyone between the ages of 18 and 45 who usually likes films in the horror/thriller genre. I find ebay is a great way to get low-price, good quality dvd's to pad out a collection i am really quite proud of! x

  28 Days Later

28 Days is a disturbing movie, no doubt, yet it stand apart from a host of post-apocalyptic movies - the world is ravaged, don’t guess! Not from a nuclear fallout but by a lethal virus released from a British research facility by a group of animals' rights activists. The virus is so lethal that those who affected change into a permanent state of homicidal rage. Yes, the same old zombies lurking for victims. Within 28 days the virus is spreading across the seas.

England, Paris and New York all fell into the rampage of the virus, turning its denizens to zombies. When a patient named Jim wakes up from a coma in a London hospital he find the hospital and London deserted! Seems like the whole world abandoned him into an empty world! When he finds some people, it was not a pleasant experience. The murderous zombies are on to him; thankfully he was saved by the unaffected. According to a radio broadcast, which promised the answer to the virus plague, their only chance of survival is to go to a military encampment in Manchester.

But there waits the real horror...

The movie is dark and vivid, with a pale glimpse on human psyche and a trial of spirit in the survival game. 28 Days Later is an amalgamation of Lord of the Flies, On The Beach (1959), The Omega Man (1971) but it is neither another Resident Evil nor Living Dead clone. It is supposed to be a study of human character in extreme situations.

Considering it as a British film competing to the special effects galore of Hollywood, the film is the tour de force of British film maker Danny Boyle (Trainspotting). Yes, I mean it; remember from the surreal aerial scene of the meadow with words HELL like a vision and how it turns out. Give credit to Danny Boyle, he deserve it.

Novelist writer Alex Garland’s (The Beach) story is guaranteed to haunt you for days. The zombies are more “authentic” in this film (think of the priest zombie in the Church and the chained zombie soldier in the camp). However, the film is not a mere zombie shocker, it’s more than that it’s the study in human character in extreme situations and I had this feeling that the film is also inspired from William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. Cillian Murphy and Naomi Harris are excellent as Jim and Selena, the characters Leonardo DiCaprio and Tilda Swinton both turned down and Robert Carlyle was offered the role of Major Henry West which was played by Christopher Eccleston. Brendan Gleeson and Megan Burns are giving exceptional performance as father and daughter survivors, Frank and Hannah.

Overall, the movie is excellent, one of the best post apocalyptic movies I have seen. Unlike Resident Evil series, the movie is devoid of any superhuman hero stuff or computer game style. The people are more realistic and the zombies scarier, 28 Days Later is an exhilarating ride into terror.

  They are not Zombies
Review created: 09/04/07

They are not ZOMBIES, they are not ZOMBIES. Rant over, humans have contracted a viral infection, they haven't risen from the dead, as some people will have you beleive. However Danny Boyle(Director) has took the zombie genre and gave it a new breath of life. Watching a small group of survivors struggle to get out of a infested London, even amazes me now, how he got London to look deserted. Interesting character bonding, as they struggle to survive. Only christopher eccleston can spoil it at times, with his over acting.
Enjoy

  Who is Infected?
Review created: 26/11/06
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I decided to rent this movie after hearing it was the scariest thing since The Exorcist. DVD had 5.1 surround Sound and Widescreen picture. Interactive Menu etc. Also had special features and an different ending.

The movie starts at an animal research facility where monkeys are caged up. Some people break in to free the poor monkeys thinking they are doing the right thing. But how wrong they are. The monkeys had been infected with a killer virus that makes anyone who catches it totally mad for flesh. The virus is spread through blood. 28 days later we then see the extent of the infection. Empty streets and deserted buildings. But a handful of people have survived the infection. The film takes you on a journey of survivers meeting up and trying to escape the madness of infection and get to safer ground.

There are lot's of twists and turns and jumps to keep you on the edge and you cannot guess what will happen next. The fight for survival is tough but friendship and love still matters. Who will survive??

I did not find this film that scary. But I did enjoy it and found it entertaining and exciting. As I could not guess at all where it was going. Well thought out and I liked the soundtrack. I give it a 8 out of 10.

The film plot and the actual DVD was a slight let down

I wanted to purchase this film as I'm a keen zombie film fan and the attraction of seeing a deserted London was too much to bear.

However, the film had massive plot flaws which are hard to explain without giving the film away..
1. Why so few survivors?
2. Why ,after only 28 days, were the soldiers acting the way they did? Surely they of all people would handle things better.

Also, the box smelt of stale smoke but that's only a minor issue

His fear began when he woke up alone.
Review created: 27/02/09

This is quite a strange movie quite slow paced, although it is directed brilliantly. The plot is based on Four weeks after a mysterious, incurable virus which spreads fast throughout the UK in which a handful of survivors try to find sanctuary. It is one of those rare horror films which does not only inform the viewer with nice, gory slaughters but also with a share of psychological goodies. To really appreciate this movie, Looking at 'Children of Men'( a film directed by Alfonso Cuarón) might offer some insight into what it feels like to have no future.

  28 Days Later
Review created: 05/02/09

London is a graveyard. Once-packed streets are deserted. Shops empty. An eerie silence reigns. And, no, there's not a tube strike. There's a zombie invasion.

Well, technically the monsters of Danny Boyle's bloody horror don't qualify as zombies. As pedants are sure to point out, they are not the living dead but 'the infected' - poor unfortunates who have caught a deadly virus which turns them into slathering beasts intent on killing anything in sight. Do they remind you of anything? Oh yes - zombies, that's it.

But contrary to horror movie tradition, these beasts are fast. Let's face it, movie heroes don't find sidestepping one shuffling, decomposing automaton all that difficult - it's the relentless crush of a mass of the blighters that gets 'em in the end. The creatures in "28 Days Later", though, are rage-fuelled humans with unusual strength and speed.

It's not an original idea - George A Romero's "The Crazies" tweaked the formula back in 1973 - but in the hands of "Trainspotting" director Boyle, it's the basis for a stylish and occasionally very scary movie.

The script, from "The Beach" novelist Alex Garland, is far from special, throwing a ragtag bunch of survivors on a road trip to reach safety at Christopher Eccleston's military base. The dialogue's clunky, the scenario's derivative. But, despite Boyle's decision to shoot on digital video (an ugly medium), the zippy, brutal action sequences are gripping, the violence sometimes shocking.

If you're a zombie aficionado it may all prove too familiar, but casual punters should prepare for jumps. You'll be scared to (living) death.

  Very real!
Review created: 04/01/09

This film is so well made you end up believing that this really could happen. A virus spread by accident that infects most of the country. The survivors then have to fight to survive.

Called 28 days later because that is the length of time that 'Jim' is in a coma, he awakes to a seeingly abandoned, errily quiet London...

Christopher Eccleston is brilliant as the misguided Army man...in fact all the cast are faultless...

Understated but action packed.

28 Days Later is one of those small budget British films that just hits the right spot.
It tells the story of a man who awakes from a coma.
In the time he has been in the coma, the world has been taken over by mad zombies!
It tells the story of his attempt to travel to a safe house, protected by some soldiers.

28 Days Later begins with animal rights activists breaking into a research laboratory to free some chimps being used for research. Against the protestations of one of the scientists, who warns the chimps are contagious, they set one free, an action which has disastrous consequences. The chimp was infected with Rage, a virus which within 20 seconds of infection sends it’s victims into a demented zombie-like bloodlust and is passed through bodily fluid like blood and saliva.

Fast forward twenty-eight days and cycle courier Jim (Murphy) wakes from a coma to find himself in a deserted hospital, and on closer inspection, a seemly deserted London. Seeking refuge in a church he finds it scattered with seemingly dead bodies. Some, however, are less dead than others and after a near fatal encounter he is rescued by Mike (Noah Huntley) and Selena (Harris), who make Jim aware of the world he’s just woken up to. Rage has ravaged the country leaving most of it’s population either dead or one of the bloodthirsty “Infected” with only handfuls of survivors scattered around. Soon teaming up with middle-aged family man Frank (Gleeson) and his young daughter Hannah (Burns), the team set out in search of a group of soldiers broadcasting a radio message offering refuge and “salvation” from the Infected. But in a land where survival has become paramount, not all may be as it seems.
