Chloe, we're running out of ideas!

Day six of 24 feels very much like a day too far for the series. It started well enough and the first few episodes zipped along, but this series was written "on the fly", rather than being tightly plotted and written in advance, like the earliest days were, and boy does it show!

Too much of this has been seen before and it all felt a bit stale to me. It's ok ripping off ideas from elsewhere if you can do it well, but to blatantly steal from your own past, then do it worse, is a mistake. Nuke attack on US soil? Done it. Political intrigue? Done it. A plot to remove the President? Done that too. Assassination? Yep, done that. Hang on... we still have a load of episodes to write. What can we do?

What they did was introduce Jack's extended family, a family we'd never even heard of before this season, and that was something else I didn't really appreciate. I could almost buy the head baddie from the last series being Jack's brother (almost) but the sub-plot with the boy and Jack's father was just too silly for words.

None of this series really sat right with me, from the decision to use Wayne Palmer as President and then virtually write him out of half the series, to the sudden reappearance of Milo from Day One. Add to this the way characters were seemingly thrown into this randomly and it feels like a series that wasn't really planned properly. Aaron and the former First Lady were treated purely as filler, as was Charles Logan in my view.

The good news is that the producers know they dropped the ball with this series and have admitted as much. I hope they do something radical for Day Seven, but the rumoured direction of the show (Google for it if you want to know) is not a route that sounds too promising to me.

Don't get me wrong, I still love 24 and will probably still buy this boxed set, not least because Sky and Virgin Media fell out and I had to rely on friends to see half of the series (I missed the last couple of episodes and wasn't at all bothered at the time, but it would be cool to see how it ended rather than read a synopsis online) but I'll be waiting for this one to hit the sale bins, or for a cheap set to appear on eBay, before buying it.

Disappointed in this one. Must do better next time.

  24 Season 6

5 Stars to be Honest

Season 6 picks up 20 months after last season's shocking season finale, when Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) was captured by Chinese government agents - battered, bloodied and header for points unknown. Wayne Palmer (DB Woodside) is now the President of the United States. After a series of horrific terrorist attacks, Palmer and his team of advisors begin an unthinkable nail-biting day.
Jack's back!

You know how it is when you collect box sets, you just have to have it or your collection will be incomplete.

Seasons 1 to 3 of 24 were fabulous, gripping and jam-packed with good, old-fashioned ‘thrill’. You didn’t know from one week to the next who to trust, who was the double-agent/mole/terrorist/next casualty.

Seasons 4 and 5 started to get tedious, I found myself laughing at the more and more outlandish storylines as the writers tried desperately to come up with a new twist in the tale.

I found season 6 just plain ridiculous. Jack saves America, nay - the free world, nay - the Universe as we know it, from not just one terror threat, not just two terror threats… He manages to thwart more global disasters than you can shake a stick at, all in less than 24 hours, and still we don’t see him visit the toilet. Does that man have a bladder of steel? And when does he ever eat?

Sorry but the whole thing’s becoming laughable.
A good friend once said to me when I was sulking about the end of Buffy, “What do you want, a 40 year old, wrinkly slayer going around stealing the dentures from a decrepit blonde vamp?” (or words to that effect) and I can see how right he was.
In Die Hard 2, Bruce Willis utters the line, "How can the same s*** happen to the same guy twice?” in acknowledgement that the audience aren’t stupid and we’re watching it because it’s a good straightforward action movie, not because it’s believable. Come on Mr Sutherland, give us something new. Jack single-handedly plugging the hole in the ozone layer, or Jack thwarting a terrorist plot aboard the space station, it’s gotta be more feasible than yet another escaped lunatic with a suitcase bomb.

Time for Jack to hang up his holster, God bless him and all who sailed in him.

I have absolutely loved watching this whole entire season, its just a shame they finished it, I could carry on watching it forever and ever. 24 season 1-6 have been the best thing since sliced bread, these DVD's are a must have for anyones DVD collection, you can watch them all the time, they keep you thinking and also you are forever on the edge of your chair with suspence.

  Same plots, same great entertainment.

Half way through season 6 you start to think to yourself: ‘Haven't I seen this one before?’ You then realise its 24 and you have but you are compelled to keep on watching to the end.

Season 6 is by far the best series for character development since most are the plots are unique to them. Previous episodes have just seen it being all about Jack however; season six is different on this which makes it more interesting to me. This season is not so keen to kill people off as before but be assured the token good guy will get killed somewhere along the line.
You cannot criticise season six too much though for going along similar plot lines since there were a lot of unanswered questions posed by season 5. And a lot of what took place in season 5 becomes relevant in season 6; in essence making it the sequel to season 5 rather than a new season all together. So expect assassination attempts, political subversion, Jack getting arrested and detained a number of times, CTU being breached and headed by a number of different people with internal reviews and that intervention from ‘Division’ wherever that place may be. The killings the betrayals, the orders and subordination; all in 24 hours.

This is 24, this is highly entertaining, this is the way we like it.
The boxset runs for 1001 minutes over 7 DVDs.Special features include:
Cast and crew commentaries
Prison break seaon 2 Ep 1
And much more.

I decided to buy season 6 as the first 5 seasons were so thrilling, acton-packed and non-stop excitement that i had to see the latest season. What i disliked about it was the fact that it ended!! Well worth buying as i don't know many tv series that produce a season that is constantly better than all the previous seasons!

  24 forever
Review created: 20/04/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As far as 24 goes this was my only TV series I used to watch. I used to think that this was the best thing ever that happened to TV.

Now there is Heroes, Lost, Prison Break and Scrubs. They are all catching if not already taken over the classic.

Jack in the sixth was good but when you are fighting against the same type of people every 24hrs then anyone can be good. The seventh series promises to be the best yet with a new storyline and some old characters back from the dead (or so we thought) Please revive 24 back to the series that it used to be.

Lets get Jack back to stardom.

GREAT,GREAT,GREAT .Can't wait to the seventh season .Just writing this as I am listening to the news and hearing that Mr Sutherland has been arrested for drunk driving .Don't fancy being that cop arresting Jack as Jack has a rep for going after his enemies and his family and achiving maximum effect .Same as the rest more and more plots ,action and finding out he is a disposable product according to the U.S goverment . You'll not regret buying this .

  Series 6 - what a great series,
Review created: 02/12/07

After having been hooked by series 1 all those years ago it has been a real gripper ever since. Series 6 is possibly not the best, too many unbelievable twists and turns and really ham lines "you've gotta trust me" again and again.

My only worry is that without wanting to sound too political there doesn't seem to be much difference with the story line in series 6 and the current US political system. But hey that could just be me! Enjoy it!
