You know how it is when you collect box sets, you just have to have it or your collection will be incomplete.
Seasons 1 to 3 of 24 were fabulous, gripping and jam-packed with good, old-fashioned ‘thrill’. You didn’t know from one week to the next who to trust, who was the double-agent/mole/terrorist/next casualty.
Seasons 4 and 5 started to get tedious, I found myself laughing at the more and more outlandish storylines as the writers tried desperately to come up with a new twist in the tale.
I found season 6 just plain ridiculous. Jack saves America, nay - the free world, nay - the Universe as we know it, from not just one terror threat, not just two terror threats… He manages to thwart more global disasters than you can shake a stick at, all in less than 24 hours, and still we don’t see him visit the toilet. Does that man have a bladder of steel? And when does he ever eat?
Sorry but the whole thing’s becoming laughable.
A good friend once said to me when I was sulking about the end of Buffy, “What do you want, a 40 year old, wrinkly slayer going around stealing the dentures from a decrepit blonde vamp?” (or words to that effect) and I can see how right he was.
In Die Hard 2, Bruce Willis utters the line, "How can the same s*** happen to the same guy twice?” in acknowledgement that the audience aren’t stupid and we’re watching it because it’s a good straightforward action movie, not because it’s believable. Come on Mr Sutherland, give us something new. Jack single-handedly plugging the hole in the ozone layer, or Jack thwarting a terrorist plot aboard the space station, it’s gotta be more feasible than yet another escaped lunatic with a suitcase bomb.
Time for Jack to hang up his holster, God bless him and all who sailed in him.
