The series 24 somehow passed me by, but I eventually borrowed the DVD box set… and promptly lost out on a whole bank holiday weekend (they tell me it was sunny) avidly watching the whole 24hours over three days.

A great great series – the plot twists & turns each hour but they ensure the end of each finishes with such a great cliff hanger that means you just keep watching. How the TV series viewers coped waiting a whole week I have no idea.

The main character, CTU agent Jack Bauer, is convincing and although the plot does push reality to the edge with threats to the Presidents life, it clings to the real world & leaves the viewer avid for more.

What can I say that others haven't?

The answer is not much, but I'm such a huge fan of the show that I had to stick my opinions in.

The first wave of enthusiasm for 24 passed me by as I am never one to jump on the band wagon. A simmering interest passed me by when the box sets started coming out. Then I was off work ill and a friend had the first three series on dvd, so he lent me the first one.

BLEW MY MIND!!!

I could not just watch one episode. It was always a case of,
"I'll just watch one more......"

Never happened!

You know the formula by now. Series takes place over one day, twenty four episodes, each episode (with ads) is an hour and was an experiment to see if real time could be done on the small screen. Thrills, spills, danger, excitement, cliffhangers and yet another surprise around every corner.

You have to love this kind of stuff though. My girlfriend has just sat through the first series after I purchased it here on Amazon and although she got into it and was interested to see what happened next, the shockers in the last two episodes went by without so much as a flicker.

Twenty four episodes of pretty much the same plot was daring and it pretty much works. There are weaker moments and to be honest, even as a huge fan there were times that I found myself saying,
"For god's sake!! Not again!!"
as the plot took yet another turn to fill the obvious void.

This has been ironed out in future series, as has my other mild complaint. It's not really a complaint as the story moves at such a pace that there is probably no call for it. There is no comic relief. No down time. Now, the story is good and the plot twists are fantastic and keep you guessing. There really is no time to joke around, but sometimes you do just need a light hearted moment to bring you down and get you ready to be thrilled again.

The cast is perfect. Keifer is perfect for Jack. Even his voice is perfect for the character who has a back story bigger than the complete works of Shakespeare. Elisha Cuthbert as Kim again is totally spot on. She's the eye candy the men love, she's sexy enough, strong, feisty and also gives Kim Bauer the edge on combining all of this with being dopey and helpless enough to get herself into yet another scrape. The rest of the cast compliment each other beautifully, so much so that it really works.

On the whole, this is the ideal programme to watch if you like action, plot twists, suspense, cliffhangers and general all round goodies, baddies, goodies who may be baddies and all that.

Totally recommended, 24 is addictive with that added twist of real time.

A winner!!

24 series 1 - a must see suspence thriller series
Review created: 29/10/06

This is definatly one of the best addictive suspence thriller series that will grip you to the end.
The way this series is made is unique as there are picture-in-picture scenes where the it flips back and forth. the whole 24 episodes are in a one day 24 hour cycle, so each episode is 1 hour in actual time, so 24 episodes make it a one full day, where things happen at a fast rate.

Definatly a must see as there are now 5 series made and has a very large following.

  24 Season 1 - Outstanding Television - No spoilers
Review created: 16/08/06
3 of 9 people found this review helpful.

24 is an innovative, action packed thrill ride staring critically aclaimed kiefer sutherland as a ruthless CTU agent Jack Bauer. Jack must use every resource at his disposal to prevent terrorist attacks. However, Jack must do so against the clock, whereby every episode reflects real time action, ive never watched a more eventful show in my entire life...

Season 1 is by far the most subtle, having a less explosive action than the forthcoming seasons, however for this reason it retains to be one of my favouraite. The real time aspect, whereby we see the characters perform as they would in real life, skipping nothing, adds to the dramatic tension the show is renouned for.

The plot of season 1 is relatively straight forward, but as events unfould you find it to be the most exciting, dramatic, amazing show your ever going to watch. Jack must prevent an assassination attempt on a senators life, while balancing his families life in the other. It is amazing how often the writers clash these events to make the day one of Jacks longest.

Note, 24 is not for the light hearted, Jack will do anything he must to protect his family and protect his country.

With award winning writing, innovation, music, effects and sound, 24 is now in its 6 season, picking up 13 emmy nominations (more than any other tv show), featuring on the Ground breaking TV list (Aside the simpsons).

Rating: 9/10 or 5/5

  Top Quality US Entertainment
Review created: 30/06/07

Having never really got into 24, my girlfriend suggested that we go ahead and splash out on the entire box set. We had just run Six Feet Under dry so we were on the look out for some entertainment that offered that same bittersweet class of entertainment that dramatic US TV shows offer.

We threw some money into a pot and got the five series box set and popped the first disk of series one into the DVD player. Literally from the moment you run the menu on the DVD, it's up and go. You start off looking into Jack Bauer's personal life through a looking glass; the typical round-the-house scenario where things aren't as great as they could be at home. You meet his wife and daughter in a scene that you expect to become insignificant; that's not the case. The three become the centre of an overwhelming storyline that is gripping from the moment Jack leaves home to deal with a call.

The fact 24 runs in "real time" is a really refreshing take on TV series sequences and you do actually feel like time is passing you by. Simple things like an awkward silence during a conversation become really powerful when you know the whole episode is against the clock. The planning that must have gone into running the series this tight must have been outstanding. That said, there are very few moments you'll find yourself watching people just walking around. Each episode is, after all, only supposed to take place in one hour so there's plenty going on.

24 Series One has a really cunning way of throwing multiple storylines at you and making them all eventually relevant. You know that you're not meeting a character's family just because the director wanted to fill a bit of film reel. There is an incredible amount of detail in each and every aspect of each episode which is why we just couldn't sit and watch the whole thing in one go. It's an incredibly psychological series that will really please viewers wishing for a more action-packed yet dramatic "whodunnit?" DVD series.

Towards the end of the series, I felt I was growing a deep sense of paranoia. With the series being so action-packed at literally every second, you still found yourself falling into a false sense of security. The typical "Oh, everything is going to be OK now" factor that the happy-ending-Hollywood directors like to use is brief, if not rare in 24 Series One. There is no "cooling off" period where the director calms things down towards the end of the series in order to afford a sequel...

I'm very much into detective series and 24, for me, is a step up from conventional TV shows given to us from across the water. It's fresh, different, and continues to stay relevant to what's actually going on in the world at the moment.

My verdict is that the series is fit for anyone who likes to think outside the box and has a slight morbid fascination for the fact things aren't always perfect. If you're doubting picking up 24 because it looks complicated, do yourself a favour and own this must-have series.

AWSOME!!!!! never seen another series that has or will compete. The acting, writers and plot lines keep you on the edge of your seats. I have now watched the whole series of 24 and am having withdrawal symptoms, wish I had only just started to watch it. Got to wait till October, now, for series 6.

As you would have guessed, by now, that I am addicted and 24 deserves that. Kiefa Sutherland your the best. If you haven't seen this series I recommend you do.

  The following takes place between....
Review created: 06/03/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

There are many reviews for this boxset so I shall keep mine brief and to the facts.

To me, 24 is like the American version of Spooks but so more farfetched. Don’t get me wrong, 24 is well written and contains excellent acting but the story lines are, to me, not that believable. It’s a unique concept for a show to portray that events occur in real time and the ‘following events take place between’ the given hour but for me; it made the plots too farfetched which could detract from the enjoyment. And to be honest, that blasted clock got on my nerves towards the end of the series since they are more noticeable on DVD since on TV they faded into commercials.

Otherwise 24 is nothing short of an excellent piece of Entertainment, which really, should be the only thing that matters.
So what does take place between the hours of 24 season 1. Well, over 500 deaths, a 747 plane bomb/ crash, an election, numerous kidnappings, rape, more murders, sex, stabbings, cover-ups, accidental murders, affairs, betrayal, guns guns guns, guns for hire, infiltration, assignation attempts, torture, car chases, car accidents, a little more sex, pregnancy, secrets, confessions, and lies to name but a few. No one sleeps though for 24 hours but looks amazing – must be that LA sunshine.

There are no 'special features' like makings of, or behind the scenes footage on this boxset, apart from an alternative ending. Get 24, because it's 24! And you will certinaly enjoy it if like me you never watched it when it was on TV. Don't get 24 if you are expecting a believable take on a possible US government depatment.

i saw the adverts for this series on tv but decided not to watch it at the time (other commitments) however i saw it on ebay and thought i'd give it a try, and WOW am i glad i did, this series has totally converted me from someone who wasnt keen on keifer sutherland to someone who shouts at the tv"go jack go!" the minds behind this series are truely great and i think it rivals the original csi and law and order criminal intent, its very intelligent and fast paced, which made me glad i had the whole set and didnt need to wait a week before the next episode (i have no patience) then just when u think you've got it figured out it twists and turns nicely so i would say it's unpredictable enough to keep you interested.
the real time style of filming was really good too and added a whole new dimesion to watching tv with clever simple use of split screens so u could keep up with sub plots during the course of the "day"
i would highly recommend buying ,borrowing ,begging this series and i think it's an usual person who can fail to be hooked due to the inventive brilliant storylines with good sub-plots that are as well written as the main event, and also the really really brilliant acting from every actor on the show ,who manage to make the characters truely "real" and belivable. i have since gone on to buy and watch the next 3 seasons of 24 and i cant wait for season five!

one last point? the bad guys never who u think it is and just because a characters smarmy or arrogant doesnt make him the bad guy, just as the nice helpful bimbo may not atcually be that dumb! i love it as it's far more true to life and helps keep u guessing to who's behind what and whats going to happen next! buy and watch it now...i dare u! and im willing to bet most of u who have or who will agree with me ;p !

We loved everything about the series even watching a couple of episodes in one evening when we were desperate to see what was going to happen next. Sad yes, but worth it. My only problem was with Dennis Hopper's very dogey accent - you'll know it when you hear it. Enjoy.

One of the most popular dramas on the planet at the moment has to be 24. The series one box-set is an awesome way to get acquainted with Jack Bauer and the rest of CTU if you have been living under a rock for the last few years and have somehow missed this thrilling series.

The basic premise of the show is that it runs from midnight to midnight, with 24 episodes, each one of which is one hour long in order to make the series last one whole day. The real time adventure in Series 1 begins when CTU agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sunderland) is called in to protect Presidential Candidate David Palmer (Dennis Heysbert) who is in line to become the first Black President of the United States. From this point on the show takes an array of twists and turns and each hour finishes on a cliffhanger. If you haven’t seen Series 1 then buy this DVD as this truly is the best thing on television.

  Jack's The Lad!
Review created: 09/05/07
by:
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I always liked the top American TV series "24", starring the brilliant Kiefer Sutherland as the ruthless, resolute and remorseless counter-terrorism agent Jack Bauer.
What stopped me really getting into it was the fact that when it aired on UK television the storyline was constantly interrupted by overlong ad breaks, and the producers of the series used the old "get 'em to come back next week" trick of always leaving the viewer hanging in the ether at a crucial and dangerous part of the story.

Then I got my hands on the full box set of Season 1 at eBay, (for about £13!) and there's been no holding me ever since! What you have in effect is a 17-hour-long feature film, as you lose about 7 hours from the supposedly 24 hour long episodes once you take out the ad breaks! No more having to wait impatiently for the endless damned ads to finish, and instant gratification at the end of an episode, as you can immediately click into the next one to find out what happened. (Bliss!)

So why is it that 24 was/is so successful, and why did it so effectively capture the imagination of the viewing public worldwide?
I think the main reason is that it is highly topical. The first series was released in November 2001 to a TV audience that was still reeling from the non-stop and graphic media coverage of the real-life terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in September of the same year. 24 is about a national counter terrorist unit (CTU) based in Los Angeles who's mission statement is to protect the country and the people from the very sort of terrorist attack to which it had just been subjected.
In the first series a team of Balkan terrorists is attempting to assassinate Senator David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) the first African-American presidential candidate. The original storyline actually featured Islamic terrorists, but subsequent to the 9/11 attacks this was felt to be "too close to the bone" by Fox, and the script was altered.

The first series came in for some slight criticism because it does appear to be split into two distinct parts. The plot to assassinate David Palmer takes up the first 12 episodes, and the following 12 are the attempts of the CTU to prevent further terrorist outrages and capture the dastardly perpetrators. This was caused by Fox initially planning for the series to end after the twelfth episode, and then changing their mind after the overwhelming success of the show and commissioning a further 12 episodes to be "tacked on". I have to say that personally I didn't find the series disjointed and thoroughly enjoyed all 24 episodes.

The extras on this DVD box set are practically non-existent.
There is an "alternative ending", which in my own opinion was far weaker than the original. The only other extra is a preview of series two, which is really only a two minute monologue from Kiefer Sutherland telling us how much he enjoyed making the first series and promising us bigger and better thrills and spills in series two. You don't even get a preview of any of the action, or any hint of the storyline!
Seemingly this lack of extras was caused by Fox being in a huge hurry to get the series out on DVD, and certainly they make up for it in future series, where there's a virtual multitude of different extra features.

I would highly recommend the box set of 24 - Series One to anyone who likes high-powered, adrenaline fuelled action features. For me, the box set is the only way to watch this show.
