An Updated Version of Those Old Saturday Matinee's
Review created: 26/06/08

Director Roland Emmerich weaves myth and legend together in this epic love story. As the Ice Age is ending, the Yagahl people are struggling to survive. When Evolet (Camilla Belle), a young, blue-eyed girl is found and brought back to the tribe, their esteemed elder, Old Mother (Mona Hammond), realizes that the child is fulfilling a prophecy and will be instrumental in saving the Yagahl. D'Leh (Steven Strait) swore his heart to Evolet when she first came to the tribe, and after many years claims her as his own. But no sooner are the young lovers together, than they are torn apart by mysterious men arriving on horseback who kidnap many of the Yagahl, including Evolet, for slave trade. Determined to save his love and their people, D'Leh embarks on a rescue mission with his father figure Tic'Tic (Cliff Curtis). Along the way, they encounter different lands, new people, and strange creatures including giant birds akin to a killer ostrich. Mixing history and fantasy, there is little (if anything) that is historically accurate in this film. Rather, Emmerich weaves together myths and legends to unite people from different lands into one force and bring down a great evil that threatens all of their civilizations. Emmerich also tackles multiple universal themes: the redemption of an outsider, the coming of age of a boy who becomes a leader, the importance of loyalty, and the discovery and understanding of new cultures. Ultimately, he tackles the age-old saga of star-crossed lovers and the power of love. Omar Sharif narrates this love story that spans mountains, valleys, deserts, and rivers.

"More than anything, 10,000 BC is an updated version of those old Saturday matinee action films and serials, filled with hair-breadth escapes, wild coincidences, things foretold by ancient prophecy and mysterious places."
"However, sabre-toothed tigers were long extinct even as far back as 10,000 BC. Perhaps the hero should be hairier and the movie re-titled 1,000,000 BC. Keep the tiger, as he steals the show.

This film starts off quite promising but soon tails off. There are some good set pieces in it but far too much of the film just shows people walking across huge expanses of landscape. Out of all the films Roland Emmerich has made this is easily the worst one. Disappointing terrible acting and very slooooooow, i couldn't wait for it to finish!!

I love these kind of films anyway but i have to say this was brilliant a really good watch!

This incredible special-effects spectacle follows the journey of D'Leh (Steven Strait), our hero, who must cross un-chartered territory, form an army and discover an advanced lost cilvilisation before he can fight for his people's freedom to becaome the champion of time when legend began.

Highly Recommended.

Lively fantasy adventure in which a brave tribe face up to the hazards of prehistoric life including hairy mammoths, sabre-toothed tigers and a bunch of nasties, complete with pyramids, who seem to think they are bloodthirsty Aztecs. Utter nonsense but older children will love it.

Well yet another film full of CGI but nothing else. Seemed to go on for hours while waiting for something to happen or even a story to appear but it never came and in the end the whole family was happy when the end came. If you like CGI films then fine but this is a no brainer film that wasnt worth the time wasted watching it.

Special effects in this film are very impressive the storyline could have potentially been equally so, but like so many films the script writers have opted for a safe formula of hero and heroine with archetypal villains and the ultimate triumph of good over evil, this, we have all seen before, and will continue to see over and over again until somebody has the courage to stray from the easy options and produce something that is truly thought provoking, the potential is there and there is tremendous scope for anyone with a vivid imagination to expand on the very limited knowledge we have of the Pre-Historic times this film was set in,and give everybody some worthwhile entertainment. perhaps I should start writing some film scripts!

Bought this because it was nice and cheap. To be fair it did its job of keeping me entertained in a spare few hours but the story was rather predictable and its not exciting when you know whats going to happen. Generally felt indifferent to this film.
